Monkey King appreciation thread

Sorry if it's inappropriate to post this here, but I think this is a topic that's relevant to this website. I had a "discussion" about the history of competitive Cod, and he said there were FTPs with demos and news pieces that were easy to access. When I asked to access them, he started getting mad and started questioning why I didn't give a shit until now. Why would that even be relevant? I just wanted to see stuff, but all he told me was to check their facebook (no name or link provided, Google came up with nothing.) He just acts like a little baby and tells me I don't really care.

Here's the conversation, blanked out names to avoid witchhunts: (I'm yellow) http://i.imgur.com/WkfGlnX.png

I notice your Cod sections on here are missing a lot of events. Is this what you have to deal with? And do they actually have this stuff hiding away somewhere?

What did you expect? It's the Call of Duty stereotype; doesn't really matter if it's PC or console because they're all immature pricks. That being said, I'm pretty sure he's trolling you. I don't think he was ever involved in PC CoD because those people would want everyone to know that their community existed and how amazing it was. If he was, he wouldn't have told you they existed or that they're "easy to access".

I've done some digging a while back on these PC CoD tournaments, so I can tell you what I know so far. Articles on PC CoD were mainly on sites like GotFrag, Amped, CAL forums, and a couple others I forget the names of. All of those sites are down. GotFrag does have some pages archive on The Internet Archive, but you need the original URLs to access them. I actually reached out to the original database designer of GotFrag since I figured he would have a super secret backup of the data, but he told me he didn't have anything anymore. All of the files were transferred to MLG, where it ultimately died. F

Usually I can find old CoD tournaments if they were a part of other events, but I also can't find information on those other events. That's also why were still missing a lot of smaller CS 1.6 tournaments. I know there was a lot of ClanBase and CAL tournaments, but I can't find anything on them anywhere.

In other words, forget learning about CoD history. Anything related to CoD will just lead you on a wild goose chase. I've wasted a lot of my time trying to find anything on these older tournaments and ended up with nothing. If someone from the CoD community wants to help out or send us information on these tournaments, then I'll look into it. But I'm not going to actively search for something I know doesn't exist. They didn't care enough about preserving their own history, so their history died with them.

Thanks for the thorough response. What about console Cod history? They have Codpedia and a bunch of news websites, but what do you think of that? Is it better than the PC side?

It's certainly better solely because of the existence of CoDpedia (it's actually CoD eSportspedia). Now they have a place to record the history of their scene, but it has a lot of problems at its core. CoD eSportspedia is the only competitive wiki I know of that doesn't cite any sources on their pages. I remember one of the admins of the site telling me that a lot of the information on the wiki for the earlier tournaments are based on his own personal knowledge and what the pros are telling him. It's hearsay, and this is a problem for me especially because a lot of the information on there may or may not be true.

I've actually caught a lot of inaccuracies on this site. I don't bother recording them because I'm too busy trying to work on this site. The ones I do remember well are the ones that people try to submit tips on. It says somewhere on there that Burnsoff won $25,000 from a MW3 FFA, when in fact he won a jeep and a bunch of prizes worth $25,000. Someone interpreted that cash prize as fact, and tried to pass it off here. Good thing I verify the facts or else I'd have a bunch of CoD kiddies making shit up and devaluing what we have going on here.

They're also missing a lot of their own tournaments everywhere. That's not necessarily the fault of the people who run it, but the blame is on the CoD community as a whole. Competitive wikis rely on user contributions. They just don't care enough to record their own history, especially the Australian scene. They supposedly have their own league and a lot of tournaments, but they never add them. It's their responsibility so if they don't add them, no one will. I managed to find stuff on MES and Gold Coast LANs. The CoD community doesn't really care about these things, so they don't cover them and they don't add them to the wiki.

Basically, the CoD community is self-imposing their own Dark Ages. If their community as whole can't be bothered to record everything, then so be it. It's their game, their community, their history. All we'll ever know about from the outside looking in is MLG. There's nothing I can do to change their attitude. I've accepted that fact that I'm always going to be ignorant of CoD history. I'll try to add whatever I can here whenever I get some reliable information, but I'm not wasting anymore time on them.

I am part of the PC CoD era, the last competitive title being Call Of Duty 4, in fact one of the players who earned the most in CoD4 and dominated early 2008 through to late 2009 when I quit (I'm on the rankings on this site). I can tell you that I earned at least 3 to 4 times more than what is on this webiste, but with it being so long ago and winning so many things with smaller prize money, it's hard to keep track of.

Most of the major Call Of Duty online hubs have been gone for a while now. This isn't so much the communities fault as much as it is Activision's. With the push of console and no backing for the PC crowd, our community struggled to keep the game alive. It finally breathed its last breath on or around late 2014. http://eu.cybergamer.com did its best to keep it going but ultimately with no incentive to get better at the game other than for fun, it hasn't been able to retain players, other than those who still play on stock servers.

A major part of why all these other titles are extremely active is the cash and competitions surrounding these games. Something we unfortunately lack :( Shame really, CoD4 was an extremely fun and spectator friendly esports title with very intense matches.

Finally, after 3 years, Dota get a brand new hero and it's also the first original hero of Dota 2. This will start a new page of the game and hopefully he'll pave the way for more hero releases in the future. No longer we will have to wait for years for new character to be introduced into the game. Let's have a thread appreciating the new age of the game we all love. Except for all retards who burn out and hate Dota yet frequent a dead forum about Dota for some reason aka. 90% of PD userbase. zedge, popular ringtones, mp3 ringtones,
